27.02.2006 - Saudi forces 'in militant clash'

Security forces in the Saudi Arabia capital Riyadh have clashed with suspected Islamic militants, it has been reported.

The reports say the security forces are surrounding the militant suspects.

It comes three days after a suicide bomb attack on the world's largest oil-processing plant at Abqaiq, in eastern Saudi Arabia.

According to an Islamic militant website, al-Qaeda was behind Friday's attack on the oil plant.

Unconfirmed reports on Al-Arabiya television say the Saudi forces exchanged gunfire with the militants, whom they suspected were involved in the oil plant attack.

The militant website said Friday's attack, in the eastern province of Dammam, was part of al-Qaeda's campaign to force "infidels" out of the peninsula.

The attack was foiled when guards opened fire on at least two cars carrying explosives as they tried to ram the gates.

At least one of the vehicles blew up, killing the occupants. Two of the guards were killed, and another two were wounded, Saudi officials reported.

The Saudi government said it stopped the attack and output at the plant was not affected.

The al-Qaeda network on the Arabian Peninsula has long called for attacks on Saudi oil installations.
