England suffered a double blow on Tuesday as captain Michael Vaughan and pace bowler Simon Jones were ruled out of the first Test in India.
Vaughan will fly home immediately after continuing to struggle with a knee injury in a nets session in Nagpur, and his place on the tour looks doubtful.
Earlier in the same session, Jones collapsed with a suspected knee injury.
England will be captained in the first of the three-match series by Lancashire all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.
Jones pulled up in his delivery stride during the nets session at the VCA Stadium and fell to the ground with pain in his left knee.
"He's been for a scan and there will be an update when we have seen the result," said an England spokesman.
Opener and vice-captain Marcus Trescothick has already returned to England for family reasons.
Owais Shah became the third player, after James Anderson and Alastair Cook, to be called up from the A side to the senior squad following the string of injuries.
Jones, who played a crucial role in last year's Ashes series, has had a history of injury trouble.
He missed the decisive fifth Ashes Test last summer due to surgery on his right ankle and did not go on the tour of Pakistan.
The Welshman also suffered severe knee ligament damage against Australia in 2002, although that injury was to his right knee.
