28.02.2006 - Killer's wife is 'glad he's dead'

The wife of confessed killer Terry Rodgers says she is "glad" her former husband is dead.

Rodgers, 57, admitted shooting his daughter Chanel Taylor, 23, weeks after her wedding and was facing trial when he died of a hunger strike.

His former wife Anne, 52, said in a statement: "My feelings for him are hate - pure, unadulterated hate."

Rodgers died at Lincoln County Hospital on Saturday after being moved from Lincoln Prison after refusing to eat.

Chanel's husband Lee Taylor said his father-in-law "took the "cowardly way out" by taking his own life in prison.

Forgiveness 'impossible'

"If it wasn't for that man, my beautiful wife would be here with me now," he said.

The former security firm boss lived in South Normanton, Derbyshire but had moved to live with his daughter in Huthwaite in Nottinghamshire before the shooting in May 2004.

He was due to face trial for Mrs Taylor's murder on 6 March and had already admitted shooting her at home.

But prosecutors had refused to accept his guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Mr Taylor said: "I feel cheated that I won't get the chance to face Terry in court. I had wanted to do that for Chantal's sake.

"Terry clearly wasn't prepared to face up to what he had done."

Mrs Rodgers said: "When Terry first went on hunger strike we fully expected to hear the news that he had died. This time it came out of the blue.

"I make no apologies for the fact I am glad he is dead.

"It's impossible for me to forgive - right now all I feel is contempt and hatred towards him.

"When he made the decision to pull that trigger he destroyed our lives and no punishment on earth is enough to make him pay."

She added: "I'm so angry that he took away Chanel's future chance of happiness.

"She was a newly married woman, full of plans for her life with Lee. I know she wanted to start a family."

Mrs Rodgers said only a mother who had lost a child would know what she was going through.

"The one time my baby really needed me I wasn't there to protect her and that feeling of guilt will haunt me forever."

Mrs Taylor had only been married seven weeks when she was killed.
