Icy winds have brought the coldest weather this year to parts of the UK and lead to road and school closures.
Pupils in the north of Scotland and parts of Wales are being told to stay at home for a second day following snowfalls of more than 10cm.
On the M57 in Merseyside, one person has been killed in a crash thought to have been caused by wintry conditions.
Forecasters say snow will hit more areas overnight, including parts of the south, with temperatures as low as -7C.
BBC weather presenter Philip Avery said the wintry conditions were likely to continue over the next few days.
"Further snow showers can be expected, particularly across the north of Scotland, but also to a lesser extent in other areas exposed to the north to north-westerly wind," he said.
"Night time frosts will be widespread and there will be little melting of lying snow."
Many areas, however, will avoid the snow altogether and will have a dry but very cold few days, he said.
Weather warnings
Winds will be lighter on Thursday but temperatures will remain cold, with highs of between 3C and 5C.
Most areas will have sunny spells but further snow showers are likely to affect northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and the Midlands during the day.
There is the risk of snow showers in the south but it is unlikely to settle.
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for northern Scotland and Wales, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and northern England.
Roads closed
The whole of north Wales has experienced heavy falls of snow in many areas, affecting roads.
Police have advised people not to travel unless absolutely necessary and be prepared for long journey times.
There is particular disruption in Flintshire, Denbighshire and Gwynedd, with parts of the A55 closed.
Another night of heavy snow and wintry conditions in the north of Scotland is also causing problems.
Grampian Police have warned that many routes are blocked, with the A90 badly affected, especially around the Stonehaven area, and the A92 shut between Stonehaven and Inverbervie.
Several people were injured in the crash on the M57 in Merseyside. All three lanes of the southbound carriageway towards Liverpool were closed as a result of the accident, which involved several vehicles.
Overnight snowfall in the region has disrupted some rail routes and Mersey ferry services are cancelled.
