02.03.2006 - Gang's 60 years for sword murder

Three gang members who murdered a "good citizen" with a samurai sword in revenge after he stood up to them, have been given a total 60 years in jail.

Father-of-three Lemy Bullock, 36, had warned the gang over "bullying and intimidation" after they attacked a member of his family.

Aaron Kent, 24, from Bettws, was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday.

Mohammed Nasser, 44, will serve 24 years and Martin Bruce, 38, 16 years.

The court heard how the gang had terrorised the docklands area of Newport and were involved in violence and drug dealing.

Prosecutor Gerard Elias QC said: "Mr Bullock disliked bullies and was offended that the gang had attacked cousin Nick Griffiths.

"The gang had given Mr Griffiths a beating for allegedly dealing drugs on their patch.

"Mr Bullock told the gang he was not afraid to stand up to them. But they set out to deal with him once and for all."

The court heard how the gang tried to pick a row with Mr Bullock as he drank in the Harvey pub in Pill, but he had "brushed them off".

They went away but returned soon after wearing masks.

Mr Elias said: "A witness saw Kent, holding the samurai sword, kick open the side door of the pub.

"He entered the pub and delivered two fierce stab wounds into the left side of Mr Bullock's belly.

"The blows cut 24 centimetres into Mr Bullock's side cutting deep into his liver."

Mr Bullock, described in court as a "gentleman and a lovely family man," was rushed to hospital following the attack but died a few hours later.

Kent had admitted murder, before Bruce and Nasser, both from Pill in Newport, were convicted at Cardiff Crown Court.

Sentencing the three to life imprisonment, Judge John Griffith Williams QC said: "You three did what you did because you were confident no-one would say anything against you.

"No-one had a bad word to say about Lemy Bullock and were outraged at what you did."

Nasser was described as the gang's leader who had exploited Kent's "violent disposition" to carry out the killing.

"It was you that called for weapons and you that supplied disguises," he said.

Kent, who had a previous conviction for stabbing, was a "willing lieutenant" to Nasser.

Mr Bullock's mother Gwenda, 57, said after the verdict the family felt "justice had been done" with the verdicts.

"All the family would like the thank the judge for realising the terror these people caused all their lives," she said.

"Lemy was a wonderful son, father and brother that we have now lost. He was a pillar of the community and was standing up for his family.

"The sentence goes some way to help us in our grief."
