A number of people are feared to be buried after an avalanche in the northern Italian province of Cuneo.
Reports say it struck in Artesina, near the border with France, where a skiing competition was taking place.
Rescue workers said a wall of snow swallowed up athletes and officials, according to Ansa news agency.
Emergency teams are searching for survivors, and helicopters have been called in to take the injured to hospital, officials said.
