07.03.2006 - MP asks more Jowell questions

A Conservative MP is writing for a second time to the parliamentary watchdog about the business affairs of Tessa Jowell's husband David Mills.

On Monday, the culture secretary said she thought Mr Mills had "never owned" shares in the Old Monk pub chain, from which it is alleged he made Ј67,000.

But Sky News claims Mr Mills may have had an interest in a company which in turn owned the shares.

Tory MP Nigel Evans said this should have been declared by Ms Jowell.

Newspaper claims

He has written to Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Sir Philip Mawer about the matter.

At the weekend, a newspaper alleged that Mr Mills had made a Ј67,000 profit on shares he bought in the Old Monk Company in 1998, when Ms Jowell was a public health minister.

In her response, Ms Jowell said she had "never heard of this company or the transactions until this weekend".

She added: "I understand the shares were never owned by my husband."

On Monday, Sir Philip met Ms Jowell and told her she did not need to give any more details about her husband's financial dealings.

His spokeswoman said the situation could be reviewed if new details were brought to the commissioner's attention.

Documents obtained by Sky News were said to show that, while Mr Mills may not have owned shares in the Old Monk pub chain directly, he may have had an interest in a company which in turn owned the shares.

Mr Evans, who also wrote to Ms Jowell about the share allegations before Sky's claims, said: "This is a declarable interest that should have been declared in the register of members' interests.

"It doesn't matter at the end of the day that his name wasn't on the share ownership.

"If it was on the company that owned the shares and he benefited from the profit then clearly they were declarable."

Marriage break-up

Mr Mills and Ms Jowell announced the break-up of their marriage at the weekend.

Mr Mills' lawyer blamed this on the furore over a Ј344,000 payment.

Italian prosecutors have been examining claims the money was paid to Mr Mills, an international lawyer, in return for helpful testimony in a corruption probe concerning Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in 1997.

Last week, Ms Jowell was cleared by Tony Blair of breaching the ministers' code of conduct - because a report said her husband had not told her about the gift.

Both Mr Mills and Ms Jowell have denied any wrongdoing.
